Candidate Statement

I am a current Director and a past Officer of NAPABA and I desire to continue my service to our community through NAPABA as a Director in 2022. I believe in the importance of NAPABA as the national voice for the APIA legal profession and the need for NAPABA to promote justice, equity, and opportunity for Asian Pacific Islander Americans. As a NAPABA Director, I hope to continue advancing NAPABA’s mission of assisting its members in professional development and attainment of their career aspirations. I also aim to foster community involvement among members of the APIA legal community and to inspire and empower the next generation of APIA leaders from the legal profession as we increase representation and influence of APIA attorneys.

I first joined the NAPABA Board in 2001 as a Regional Director for SoCal/San Diego with the intent of deepening relationships between local affiliates and NAPABA as well as furthering NAPABA’s work as a voice for the APIA community. My initial term on the NAPABA Board was cut short by a tour of duty for the Marine Corps as I was recalled to active duty deployment for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning from deployment, I waited for an opportunity to rejoin the NAPABA Board and did so in 2004. Over the next 6 years, I served NAPABA in several capacities including organizing a Western Regional Conference, serving as the Vice President – Finance & Development and co-founding the Military and Veterans Committee.

This past year, the importance of NAPABA’s role as a voice for the APIA community came into sharp focus as hate incidents and crimes against APIAs gained greater attention in our nation. NAPABA’s great Staff brought NAPABA into the national dialogue. Staff and Board members represented our community well in conversations with government entities and community groups and created momentum for NAPABA to continue being a voice for our community. There remains much work to do in this regard and I would be honored to continue my service on NAPABA’s Board as we take further steps toward optimal representation and influence for APIA attorneys that will enable equality and justice for all.

During my term as a Director this past year, I had the honor of serving as the Chair of the Governance Elections and Nominations (GEN) Committee. The GEN Committee adopted processes and procedures, creating the infrastructure that supports NAPABA’s work for our members and for the community. We re-vamped the nomination and election process for NAPABA Board positions to be in keeping with best practices for corporate governance and we began work to review NAPABA’s leadership pipeline development. If elected to serve as a Director in 2022, I will continue to apply my collaborative leadership style to further the projects we began this year and cement progress that will enable NAPABA’s mission into the future.

Our nation is at an historic inflection point as we seek to understand the “new normal” after the pandemic while addressing racial justice and an ever-widening divide among Americans. The need for NAPABA as a voice for our profession and our community has never been more apparent. I humbly seek the opportunity to continue serving our community as a Director on the NAPABA Board.
