Alen Hsu
Candidate for Vice President for Membership
Endorse Candidate
Candidate Statement
After having the privilege of serving as NAPABA’s Alternate Regional Governor of the Southeast region (“ARG”), I am honored to be running for NAPABA Vice President of Membership (“VP of Membership”).
Experience
I have always strove to make a difference wherever I can. One of my first leadership experiences was serving as President of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida (“APABA”). As President, I worked tirelessly to build APABA’s membership, promote professional development, develop synergy with other bar organizations, and organize events for the local APA community.
In fact, during my tenure as President of APABA, we hosted APABA’s first U.S. Citizenship Workshop and first Social Security Workshop for the local APA community. To promote professional development, we organized APABA’s first free legal symposium for local startup companies, a judicial reception, and first “Table for 8” series, an exclusive dinner with eight APABA members and U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom, senior counsel for the Miami Marlins, and senior litigation counsel for GL Homes. We also expanded APABA’s membership by almost twofold and updated APABA’s website to make the user interface more accessible and appealing. In furtherance of developing inter-cooperation with other organizations, we jointly hosted events with the Caribbean Bar Association, Gwen S. Cherry Women’s Lawyer Association, and the Coral Gables Bar Association. With the assistance of APABA’s amazing founders, our board organized more events and robust programs than other years in the past.
Since then, I have applied the same vigor and diligence as NAPABA’s ARG. As a fledgling ARG, I took the time to listen, observe and learn how NAPABA, its board, and the Southeast Region interacts and functions, taking on an active role this past year. While the ARG is not a voting member of the NAPABA board and is not required to attend quarterly meetings, this past year, I attended every NAPABA board meeting and appeared on the monthly calls and special meetings. I worked with the Southeast Regional Governor, Christopher Chan, and regularly engaged affiliate leaders, collected and assembled the affiliates’ quarterly report, and made concerted efforts to rally affiliate members to attend Lobby Day, regional conferences, and webinars. In addition, I served on NAPABA’s leadership program task force and general programs task force. Together, we created NAPABA’s inaugural Leadership Advancement Program, and fine-tuned the Pre-Law Conference and NAPALSA Conference. Recently, I assisted NAPABA At-Large Board Member, Gary Zhao, to seek out speakers for the Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy, while also having the privilege of attending the two-day leadership training. However, in my capacity as ARG, I am most proud of the relationships that I built within the Southeast region. As we all know, what makes NAPABA great, is its members and network of 50,000 attorneys.
My Vision and Commitment to You
Over the last two years, I have taken extensive steps to serve NAPABA and the Southeast region. Building on that experience, if elected, I will focus on: (1) expanding member benefits and heightening member satisfaction in every region; (2) increasing NAPABA’s total membership and revenue; (3) engaging members to attend and utilize NAPABA’s robust programming and benefits; and (4) further analyzing the structured membership and convention fees to find a long term solution to fairly structure fees and membership tiers. To achieve these goals, I promise to work tirelessly, field membership questions and issues, be open-minded, and work with the membership committee and NAPABA board to improve on the panoply of assets that NAPABA offers and does year-round.
In sum, I am deeply committed to NAPABA and your interests, and I hope to earn your vote. Thank you for your considerations and I look forward to seeing you at the annual convention in Chicago.
