2023 NAPABA Convention
/

Celebrating 35 Years of Leading and Uniting the AANHPI Legal Community

As we bid farewell to the 2023 NAPABA Convention, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each one of you who contributed to making this event a resounding success. We welcomed 2,100 attendees to Indianapolis, with 700 first time Convention attendees! Your presence, engagement, and enthusiasm truly made a lasting impact.

Throughout the Convention, we witnessed the power of unity, collaboration, and the collective spirit of NAPABA. The networking, mentorship, knowledge exchange, and most importantly, the power of showing up, were all on display in real-time as we build a stronger, more connected community.

The plenary luncheons were nothing short of inspiring, featuring compelling discussions and insights from distinguished thought leaders who are not just experts from our AANHPI community, but national figures on these important issues. The session on the rights of transgender athletes provided a platform for not only understanding some of the legal complexities, but also emphasizing the humanity behind the legality. The session on law school campus discourse revealed the challenges, opportunities, and constant efforts to create inclusive and diverse environments within legal education, and could not have come at a more critical time.

At the President’s and Trailblazer Awards Reception, we honored the late David Kim and recognized six prominent and incredible trailblazers who have paved the way for others and advanced opportunities for AANHPIs at the national level.

Lastly, the Convention ended on a high note with an unforgettable celebration of our diverse community and shared achievements. At the 35th Anniversary Gala, emceed by actor, author, and activist Maulik Pancholy—who grew up in Indiana—the program kicked off with a musical procession to celebrate Diwali, where attendees were treated to an energetic Dhol performance. We came together to recognize accomplishments, forge new connections, and revel in the strength of our community. We welcomed the new Board of Governors and were privileged to hear from the extraordinary Mia Yamamoto on the importance of focused engagement. And while the Convention has wrapped up, our engagement with the communities of Indiana that have been so welcoming to NAPABA continues.

Thank you for being an integral part of the 2023 NAPABA Convention. We hope that you left the Convention with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration. Your energy, passion, and commitment are what make our community so vibrant. And thank you to all the CLE program chairs, speakers, and Committee and Network chairs for leading informative and educational programming that ensures NAPABA members are on the cutting edge of legal developments across the country. We look forward to connecting with you in the coming year through our various programs and hope to see you in Seattle in 2024.

Call for Programs

NAPABA is seeking program submissions on a wide range of substantive legal matters and topics of concern to the legal community to deepen our members' knowledge and skills and provide them with the opportunities to forge bonds through panel discussions, workshops, and interactive presentations for the 2023 NAPABA Convention, taking place November 9-12 at the JW Marriott Indianapolis.

General CLE Programming

We strive to represent a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds in our general CLE programming to appeal to the broadest extent of NAPABA’s diverse and multi-faceted membership. We are also mindful of the feedback we have received from past attendees, such as requests to include more programs about public interest and non-traditional lawyering. We are committed to inclusivity and innovation, and we need your help to expand the scope of submissions to include as many topics that are of interest to our membership.

Specialty Programming

NAPABA is also seeking program submissions for our specialty programming. During the Convention, special workshops and programs are held by our committees and networks to provide our members with the in-depth skills and knowledge to excel in their practices and careers. This series of workshops is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities in an immersive and interactive environment and provide our members with the opportunity to get into the details with experts in the field, beyond what may be possible during a general CLE session. The Specialty Programming tracks include:

  1. International Law Symposium presented by the International Law Committee
  2. Solo & Small Firm Boot Camp presented by the Solo & Small Firm Committee
  3. Young Lawyers Workshop presented by the Young Lawyers Network
  4. Women's Leadership Workshop presented by the Women's Leadership Network

Please note that the Women's Leadership Workshop is not seeking program submissions.

Law Student Workshop

The Law Student Workshop is a two-day, five-session workshop to guide 2L and 3L law students as they transition into the legal field as attorneys and offers networking opportunities with legal professionals from various sectors. These sessions bolster students as they enter the profession.

Model Submission

The program below was submitted through the Call for Programs for the 2022 NAPABA Convention and was accepted by the CLE Committee. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Strong title. The title reflects the content of the program. It reflects the importance of the topic and the tie to current events/changes in the legal landscape. It is creative.
  2. Compelling description on a tight and focused topic. The description provides an overview of why the issue matters and how the practice environment has changed. It tells attendees the specific topics they can expect to hear about and does not attempt to address an overly broad issue. Attendees are informed they will walk away with actionable information they can use in their practice. The description is written to convey that the program would be interesting for those who practice in the field and those who are not in the field.
  3. Diverse and experienced speakers. The moderator and speakers are a balance of firm, government, in-house, and outside experts, as appropriate to the topic, and reflect demographic diversity. They are qualified speakers on the topic and can present fresh views on the issue.

TITLE: Girls Just Wanna Have FUNds

SUBJECT MATTER: Professional Development

DESCRIPTION: In a world where women are often financially independent and build their own wealth, it is essential for women to "plan for the best but prepare for the worst," when it comes to protecting their assets. This program will provide guidance and tips geared towards a female audience on how to best protect their assets and finances in situations relating to marriage, divorce, family disputes and estate planning. Learn from family law and estate planning attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors on how to prevent financial disputes over division of family assets, address potential family disputes upon divorce or death to reduce risks of litigation, prepare for and defend litigation relating to family financial disputes, and ways to manage and preserve your assets. You will hear from attorneys and other advisors based on their experiences dealing with high profile cases and clients and learn what to and not to do. Whether you want to learn how to address these issues for your own good or to advise your clients, this program is truly essential for women at all stages of life -- single, married, divorced, re-married, retired—you name it!

Although this program is geared towards a female audience, the topics are pertinent and applicable to everyone, and all are welcome!

MODERATOR: Stephanie Louie, Attorney, Bloomquist Law, PLLC

SPEAKERS:

  • Stacie Chau, Attorney, Holland & Knight LLP
  • Linh H. Ly, Attorney, Pesner Altmiller Melnick DeMers & Steele PLC
  • Eric M. Tokuyama, Attorney, Hoffman Sabban & Watenmaker, APC
  • Theresa White, Financial Planner and Advisor, First Financial Group

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Identify legal and financial issues women should consider prior to marriage to ensure and/or protect finances; tips on managing wealth and assets for women; how to advise clients on pre-nup and post-nup agreements; issues to consider in anticipation of and during a divorce; how to prevent litigation in a potentially litigious family dispute such as divorce or inheritance disagreement; handling litigations relating to division of family wealth in divorce or probate proceedings.

INTERACTIVITY: We will feature speakers from diverse backgrounds in terms of specialty, experience and tenure. The program will also include real life examples, many from high profile cases that the speakers have dealt with personally and would share their experiences and tips. To make things more interactive and relatable, the program will also include video clips from famous TV shows regarding disputes over division of family wealth that attendees can relate to and will serve as a starting point to discuss case studies.

Scholarships Now Closed

NAPABA strives to keep the Convention affordable for our members and offers one of the best values among legal education conferences. Scholarships may be used towards Convention registration, airfare, lodging, and/or ground transportation. This year, NAPABA will offer a general Convention scholarship and a law student scholarship.

Additionally, we recognize that members have concerns with the Convention being located in the State of Indiana. As part of our response to concerns raised, NAPABA is able to provide a limited number of discounted rooms (i.e., a hotel room rate that is lower than NAPABA’s already reduced hotel block rate available to Convention attendees generally) to those who indicate that they are economically impacted by the Convention’s location. Examples of economic impact may include lack of employer reimbursement, concerns over contributing to the local economy, etc. Included on our scholarship form, applicants are requested to indicate if they are economically impacted by the Convention location in Indiana and NAPABA will take this under consideration in evaluating the scholarship package to include the discounted room rate.
