Heal. Unite. Act. From August 4th to 6th, the Oak Creek Sikh community will be hosting a series of in-person events to commemorate the anniversary, including the 10th Annual Oak Creek Sikh Memorial Anniversary Candlelight Remembrance Vigil on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 6:00 PM CT. The program includes remarks from Governor Evers, Oak Creek Mayor Bukiewicz, and representatives of the families who lost loved ones. This event is open to the public. Additional events include: 

  • Healing from Hate and Protecting Places of Worship Forum on Thursday, August 4th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM CT at Oak Creek City Hall
  • A Chardi Kala Community Event on Saturday, August 6th, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM CT (Includes Workshops) at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin
  • Akhand Path (prayer) and Kirtan on Sunday, August 7th, from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM CT at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin

These events are free and all are welcome to attend. All commemorative in-person services around the Oak Creek 10-year anniversary are being led by the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, with additional programming, marketing and community engagement support from SALDEF, the Sikh Coalition, and the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee. The direct support is for the explicit purpose of centering the Oak Creek Sikh community. More information can be found here.

WAYS TO REMEMBER AND AMPLIFY OAK CREEK

1. HILL BRIEFING: The Sikh Coalition is hosting Honoring Oak Creek, Charleston, and Pittsburgh Through Action: A Virtual Congressional Briefing with leaders from all three communities, as well as elected officials, which will focus on lessons learned and policy solutions to help make our communities safer. The briefing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 26th, at 1 PM ET. Please  help us amplify (RT HERE) and RSVP to join

2. TAKE DIRECT ACTION: The Sikh Coalition, SALDEF & Revolutionary Love are collaborating on a direct digital action starting today, which enables all concerned community members to send an email to their elected officials in Congress in support of three concrete policy recommendations to help make our communities safer. Ways to amplify and support to come. 

3. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

 SALDEF’s toolkit  - SALDEF has developed a social media toolkit with content and graphics for partner organizations to amplify the message of the Oak Creek commemoration event – “Heal, Unite, Act” during the commemoration August 4-7.

The Sikh Coalition and the Revolutionary Love Project have developed content for partner organizations to share on the anniversary August 5. The learning hub includes a short Oak Creek video produced by Forward Films for orgs to launch on social media as well as easily downloadable graphics that will be updated to the hub soon.
