Program Description: Minorities continue to increase their representation in law school leading to increases in diversity numbers for both law firms and companies upon graduation. Yet the increases have been slow and incremental, and the demographics at the highest level of partners or of general counsel continue to lack the diversity seen at the new hire level. For instance, according to the National Association for Law Placement, Inc. 2019 Report on Diversity in U.S. Law Firms, “women and people of color leave the lawyer ranks at law firms at a higher rate than white men, and women of color remain the most underrepresented of all, with Asian women making up just 1.46% of law firm partners, Latinx women making up just 0.80% of law firm partners, and Black or African-American women making up just 0.75% of law firm partners. ” This three-part program aims to help diverse attorneys bridge that gap. In this third and final installment, attendees will hear from four attorneys with unique experience in various government positions who will discuss their experience overcoming some of the barriers they faced and how they rose to their current positions. Each panelist will share their list of Best Practices on how minority attorneys can achieve success from the outset and avoid some of the common pitfalls often encountered by those in such positions. Intended Audience: Attorneys who are in private practice and who are also members of either an ethnic minority or the LGBTQ community. There will also be law firm partners, public sector lawyers, and in-house counsel in the audience who have been invited in order to meet more junior attorneys and to get elimination of bias MCLE credit. Program Format: The formal portion will involve a panel of four attorneys with experience in the public sector who would fill the following niches: 1. Federal government attorney. 2. Senior deputy district attorney for the local county. 3. Former public defender now in private practice. 4. Supervising deputy county counsel representing the local county government. The informal portion will follow immediately and will be a networking reception in separate break-out rooms followed by an opportunity drawing. Opportunity Drawing: To encourage attendees to stay after the panel discussion and network with others, gift cards will be raffled off during the reception in each break-out room. Date and Time:
