In May of 2020, George Floyd, a Black man was murdered by a white police officer who knelt on his neck for almost eight minutes. Despite Mr. Floyd repeatedly begging for his life, complaining that he could not breathe, Officer Chauvin continued to apply pressure on Mr. Floyd’s windpipe even after Mr. Floyd lost consciousness. Mr. Floyd’s death was simply the latest in a long history of Black people being murdered by police, a form of state-sanctioned violence. The string of murders and shootings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Jacob Blake and Ahmaud Arbery ignited nationwide protests that have created a groundswell of energy around defunding police and creating a world where All Black Lives Matter.

Our distinguished panelists are all passionate community leaders and activists, who’s work often challenges the current policing and punishment systems. The purpose of this program is to look at the history of policing of communities of color and other marginalized communities, including both the LGBTQ+ and Asian communities. It is also intended to cover why this issue is important to the LGBTQ+ and Asian communities, how we can be better allies to other people of color, and to discuss what safety looks like for our communities.
