Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

About APAHM

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, celebrated each May, commemorates the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

History
  • A celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States 
  • In 1977, Reps. Frank Horton (NY) introduced a resolution that would proclaim the first ten days in May as Pacific/Asian American Heritage week. Later that year, Senator Daniel Inouye introduced a similar resolution. Neither resolutions passed; however, later in 1978, Reps. Horton proposed in House Joint Resolution 1007 that the President should proclaim a week in May to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander heritage 
  • In 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450 , which annually designated the entirety of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
  • The month of May was chosen in commemoration of the first Japanese immigrant arriving to the United States in May 7,1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was mostly laid down by Chinese immigrants
  • The month of May is a time to celebrate Asian and Pacific Island American culture as well as learn more of their history.

The AAPI community is large and diverse. In addition to our racial and ethnic diversity, we each have our own distinct stories. In these unique times, we know that hearing our members’ stories and showing the diversity within our organization is crucial to our community. As fewer AAPIs enter the legal profession, it is important to emphasize the value in diverse legal professionals now more than ever.

We want to highlight our members as individuals who have their own expertise and personalities. By doing so, we hope to inspire the next generation of AAPIs, allow for networking opportunities, and build a stronger sense of community. You can answer one of the following questions to help you tell us more about you.
