NAPABA is seeking program submissions on a wide range of substantive legal matters and topics of concern to the legal community to deepen our members' knowledge and skills and provide them with the opportunities to forge bonds through panel discussions, workshops, and interactive presentations for the 2022 NAPABA Convention, taking place November 3-6.

We strive to represent a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds in our general CLE programming to appeal to the broadest extent of NAPABA’s diverse and multi-faceted membership. We are also mindful of the feedback we have received from past attendees, such as requests to include more programs about public interest and non-traditional lawyering. We are committed to inclusivity and innovation, and we need your help to expand the scope of submissions to include as many topics that are of interest to our membership.

Below are a few topics we’re particularly interested in seeing submissions for this year:

  • Attorney health and wellness
  • Alternative career paths
  • Skills training for government, non-profit, public interest, and young lawyers
  • Voting rights and voter protection

Specialty Programming

NAPABA is also seeking program submissions for our specialty programming. During the Convention, special workshops and programs are held by our committees and networks to provide our members with the in-depth skills and knowledge to excel in their practices and careers. This series of workshops is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities in an immersive and interactive environment and provide our members with the opportunity to get into the details with experts in the field, beyond what may be possible during a general CLE session. The Specialty Programming tracks include:

  1. International Law Symposium presented by the International Law Committee
  2. Solo & Small Firm Boot Camp presented by the Solo & Small Firm Committee
  3. Women's Leadership Workshop presented by the Women's Leadership Network

Please note that the Women's Leadership Workshop is not seeking program submissions.

In partnership with the National Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (NAPALSA), NAPABA is also seeking program submissions for the Law Student Workshop. The Workshop is a two-day, five-session workshop designed to help 2L and 3L law students successfully enter the legal field as attorneys. NAPABA is seeking submissions on the following topics, among others, for the Law Student Workshop:

  • Career path experiences and challenges as an AAPI
  • Navigating and networking the legal field as an AAPI
  • Personal branding
  • Resume 101: what are firms looking for and how to stand out from other resumes

Convention Recap: Leading and Uniting the AAPI Legal Community

NAPABA’s 2022 Convention was our largest in history with nearly 2,700 attorneys, judges, law students, and law professors converging on Las Vegas for three days of learning, connection, and inspiration.

The atmosphere was electric from a packed opening night welcome party to standing room only attendance for dozens of CLE panels on topics ranging from confronting anti-Asian hate to digital asset regulation, to sold out plenaries and a red-carpet worthy Gala. NAPABA 2022 was an unforgettable, record shattering Convention.

Incredibly, we had over a thousand first time attendees discover how empowering it is to connect with their fellow members, creating friendships that we know will last a lifetime. It may have been their first, but will certainly not be their last!

At this year’s Convention, the legal, political, and cultural power of our community was on full display – it is always a place where our members are heard, where they are seen, and where they always have a home.

Commitment to Our Mission and Our Members

/Congratulations to the 2022-23 NAPABA Board of Governors who were formally sworn in at the Gala. During the pre-convention board meeting, the board reaffirmed its commitment as a membership organization, inspired by its civil rights roots and advocacy values, to be the national voice for the Asian Pacific American (APA) legal profession, promoting justice, equity, and opportunity. We look forward to their dedication and commitment to guiding the organization over the coming year.

/Sandy Leung officially took office as NAPABA President for 2022-23 and shared her vision for her upcoming tenure focusing on community service, the value that NAPABA brings to its members and affiliates, and the ongoing effort to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession, for our community and all communities.

/NAPABA Executive Director Priya Purandare reiterated NAPABA’s mission to serve its members and the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community as both a bar association and a leading civil rights organization. She also highlighted the ongoing efforts of NAPABA’s talented staff not only in putting together the largest convention in our history, but also providing incredible programming, events, and value to members throughout the year.

/NAPABA congratulates outgoing President A.B. Cruz III for his steadfast leadership of the organization through an incredibly eventful two years which saw the country and our communities confront unprecedented challenges, and witness AA and NHPIs rise together stronger than ever.

/History took center stage at Gala as NAPABA’s rollcall of Past Presidents reunited those who have given so much in service to the organization.

Drawing Strength from Our Identities and Values

/Friday Plenary

Our Friday Premier Luncheon Plenary, led by incoming President Sandy Leung and featuring a powerhouse panel of in-house, outside counsel, PR, and academic perspectives provided a lively and captivating discussion on how companies and the lawyers who advise them can navigate the legal, economic, and political challenges of exercising leadership on pressing social issues and advancing diversity and inclusion.

(From left: Debo Adegbile, Sandy Leung, Jennifer Fan, Ivan Fong, and Jamie Moser)

/Saturday Plenary

On Saturday, leading experts on the history of identity and citizenship engaged in a thought-provoking conversation on the relationship between Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders and citizenship and notions of American-ness as we recognize the centennials of Ozawa v. United States and United States v. Thind. The session was opened with powerful and moving remarks from two towering NAPABA legal luminaries who happen to be naturalized U.S. citizens – U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, and Chief Judge Sri Srinavasan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

(From left: Dr. Hardeep Dhillon, Dr. Chia Youyee Vang, Professor Hiroshi Motomura, Dr. Shawn Malia Kana’iaupuni)

Presidents and Trailblazer Awards Reception

Our Presidents and Trailblazer Awards Reception recognized two organizations that have done so much in laying the foundation for an infrastructure to serve the diverse needs of our communities – The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), and the Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF). NAPABA also honored three trailblazers whose barrier breaking work has paved the way for others and advanced justice, equity, and opportunity for AAPIs: Deepa Iyer, Paul Uyehara, and Kathy Hirata Chin.

/Gala

Our 34th Anniversary Gala featured the creative forces behind the hit Netflix series Partner Track. Star Arden Cho, showrunner Georgia Lee, and author Helen Wan discussed their experiences bringing the story of an Asian American woman lawyer to the screen in a leading Hollywood role. Our members also heard from the White House’s AA and NHPI Senior Liaison Erika Moritsugu on the administration’s efforts to advance opportunity for our communities -- the night was all about visibility and advancement.

The Gala was also an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of NAPABA members who have given so much to their clients, their communities, and their profession. Watch their highlight videos below:

Did you know that the evening’s emcee, Averie Bishop, the first ever Asian American Miss Texas, was also the former president of her APALSA chapter in law school? This is just another example of the power of visibility for our community that NAPABA brings to convention each year.

Our Members Making a Difference

Throughout the Convention, members engaged in a non-partisan community service project, educating AAPI voters in Nevada and Texas about the changes to election laws and how to cast their ballots in the November election. This program was a feature of the NAPABA Community Service Corps, a national initiative to connect AAPI attorneys and law students with public service opportunities around the country. The calls were made in partnership with APIAVote, Asian Community Development Center (Las Vegas), Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC and the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), with the support of the Open Society Foundation.

Thank you to the nearly 2,700 attendees who joined us for an unforgettable 2022 NAPABA Convention. We look forward to connecting with you in the coming year through our various programs and committees and networks. All the best wishes as we head into the holiday season.

All organizations and individuals seeking meeting space over the NAPABA Convention meeting dates, November 3-6, must submit a Hosted Event Form and receive NAPABA approval prior to promotion and implementation of the Hosted Event. Hosted Event contacts may be required to submit a copy of the brochure, invitation, agenda, or other material prior to approval. The name, date, and location of the event will be published to the Convention agenda when requested.

An administrative fee will be charged per meeting once NAPABA confirms that it can accommodate the requested date, time, room capacity, and a preferred location. The Hosted Event contact is responsible for all costs associated with the approved Hosted Event, including, but not limited to, food and beverage, audio visual, room rental if outside of NAPABA’s contracted meeting rooms, etc.

Event Request Form

  • Complete a Hosted Event Request Form.
  • Please ensure you have read all policies, fees and requirements before submitting your form.
  • Once your event is approved by NAPABA and space is confirmed, the Hosted Event contact will be connected to the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas to finalize specifications for the Hosted Event.

Policies

Groups looking to host an event during the 2022 NAPABA Convention agree to abide by all operational policies and procedures that guide and govern NAPABA.

  1. Law schools, law firms, corporations, legal organizations, and NAPABA affiliates and partner organizations are eligible to submit a Hosted Event request form to host an event at the official Convention hotel.

  2. Groups may offer hosted bars (host pays) or cash bars (attendee pays) for non-alcoholic beverages without limitation. Alcoholic beverages may be offered at events only after 5 pm. Alcoholic beverages must be ticketed. If alcoholic beverages will be served, groups may offer a hosted bar and provide no more than one drink ticket per attendee per hour (the bar is not permitted to turn over to a cash bar), or a cash bar and provide one drink ticket per attendee, then the bar is turned over to a cash bar where the attendee pays for additional drinks. Open bars providing alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

  3. A separate and complete Hosted Event request form must be submitted for each event.

  4. Requests are on a space available basis and are not guaranteed.

  5. NAPABA reserves the right to relocate any room assignment. Please do not publish the name of the assigned space for your event(s) until after October 20, 2022.

  6. NAPABA will list or publicize your event(s) in printed and online program materials unless the Hosted Event contact requests otherwise.

  7. Audio Visual, additional equipment, special furniture, and food and beverage costs are the sole responsibility of the Hosted Event contact.

  8. Fees incurred by NAPABA for any room setup and breakdown requests beyond the standard NAPABA room set options are the sole responsibility of the Hosted Event contact. You will be promptly notified if such fees are anticipated or occur.

  9. NAPABA reserves the right to leave AV equipment, podiums, and head tables in rooms during your event(s).

  10. The Hosted Event contact is responsible for additional fees for audio visual, equipment, or special furniture added onsite prior to or during the hosted event.

  11. Standard room sets are conference, theater, or reception. Specific rooms are selected based on the estimated attendance for the event and use of room prior to your event(s).

  12. Events may not exceed 3 hours, the administrative fee is per hour.

  13. Promotion materials of the Hosted Event must not imply the event is part of the official NAPABA Convention activities or endorsed by NAPABA. Use of the NAPABA name or logo is prohibited on any Hosted Event materials.

  14. Hospitality Suites are located in the hotel sleeping rooms, not in the meeting space. The suites can be utilized to meet and entertain groups with less than 20 participants.
