2024 NAPABA Convention Recap

Photos by Les Talusan

It is always bittersweet to say goodbye to colleagues and friends as we head home from another memorable NAPABA Convention, but we know that the connections we’ve forged and the friendships we’ve nurtured will last a lifetime. We wanted to thank you for making the 2024 NAPABA Convention in Seattle our largest convening in history—with a record-breaking 3,400+ attendees, including 1,100 first timers who we welcomed to our NAPABA community. Thank you for being a part of this historic moment and to our sponsors for their tremendous support.

Throughout our time at Convention, NAPABA members harnessed the power of unity, collaboration, and community to connect, learn, grow, and celebrate each other and our vibrant AANHPI bar. Your presence, engagement, and enthusiasm truly made a lasting impact.

Our CLE sessions, plenary luncheons, and Gala were engaging, informative, and entertaining, but most importantly, they showcased the incredibly deep bench of legal expertise and thought leaders within our bar. Our speakers are standouts, period. We were proud to honor trailblazers who have paved the way for future generations to succeed, and to celebrate young attorneys who are already carving their own path to the top of the profession.

Most importantly, NAPABA was proud that our values remained on full display—community, advocacy, relationships, diversity, equity, inclusion, open-mindedness, and the health and wellbeing of our members and the broader AANHPI community. Our programs, policy resolutions, advocacy, and our commitment to the civil rights of populations we serve, endures. We encourage you to stay in touch with NAPABA and your local affiliate throughout the year as we continue to stand up for underrepresented communities.

We hope that you left the Convention with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration. Your energy, passion, and commitment are what make our community so vibrant. We look forward to connecting with you in the coming year through our various programs and hope to see you in Denver, November 6-8, 2025!

Call for Programs

NAPABA is seeking proposals on a wide range of substantive legal matters and topics of concern to the legal community to deepen our members' knowledge and skills and provide them with the opportunities to forge bonds through panel discussions, workshops, and interactive presentations for the 2024 NAPABA Convention, taking place November 7-10 at the Hyatt Regency Seattle. Below are the areas in which we are seeking proposals.

General CLE Programming

We strive to represent a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds in our general CLE programming to appeal to the broadest extent of NAPABA’s diverse and multi-faceted membership. We are also mindful of the feedback we have received from past attendees, such as requests to include more programs about public interest and non-traditional lawyering. We are committed to inclusivity and innovation, and we need your help to expand the scope of proposals to include as many topics that are of interest to our membership.

This year, we are interested in seeing proposals on the following topic areas:

  • Emerging Technology
  • Leadership Development
  • Practical Skills

Specialty Programming

NAPABA is also seeking proposals for our specialty programming. During the Convention, special workshops and programs are held by our committees and networks to provide our members with the in-depth skills and knowledge to excel in their practices and careers. This series of workshops is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities in an immersive and interactive environment and provide our members with the opportunity to get into the details with experts in the field, beyond what may be possible during a general CLE session. The specialty programming tracks in which we are seeking proposals include:

  1. International Law Symposium presented by the International Law Committee
  2. Solo & Small Firm Boot Camp presented by the Solo & Small Firm Committee
  3. Young Lawyers Workshop presented by the Young Lawyers Network

Please note that the Women's Leadership Workshop is not seeking program submissions.

Law Student Workshop

The Law Student Workshop is a two-day, five-session workshop to guide 2L and 3L law students as they transition into the legal field as attorneys and offers networking opportunities with legal professionals from various sectors. These sessions bolster students as they enter the profession.

The program below was submitted through the Call for Programs for the 2023 NAPABA Convention and was accepted by the CLE Committee. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Unique perspective and credible panelists. This panel emphasizes showcasing the perspective of key players in government who are tackling and setting policy around this issue. Recognizing the interest beyond corporate contexts, the panel features credible panelists with a unique outlook.
  2. Cutting edge and timely topic. Panelists delve into a widely discussed and timely topic, addressing specific questions that resonate with both audiences and practitioners. The discussion revolves around an emerging theme, staying at the forefront of current conversations.
  3. Specific and tangible learning objective. Program organizers have meticulously planned specific takeaways for the audience. The learning objectives are clear, demonstrating thoughtful consideration in designing the program for maximum audience benefit.
  4. Specific and actionable interactivity. Going beyond the traditional panel format, the panel commits to meaningful interactivity throughout the session. They've outlined methods to engage the audience and ensure participation during the Q&A session.
  5. Strong Title. The title accurately reflects the program's content, highlighting its important and unique perspectives. It serves as a compelling preview of the session's key learnings.
  6. Compelling description on a tight and focused topic. The program description provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of the issue's significance and the evolving practice environment. Attendees are informed about specific topics to expect, avoiding an overly broad approach. The promise of actionable information and practical scenarios adds value to participants' professional practices.

TITLE: Beyond ChatGPT: Gov’t Agencies on Legal, Policy & Risk Considerations of AI Innovation

SUBJECT MATTER: Emerging Technology

DESCRIPTION: In the last year, generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT (for text generation), Midjourney (for image generation), Copilot (for software code generation), and Stable Diffusion (for video generation), have taken the world by storm - reinvigorating discussions about the potential transformative uses of AI in all areas of our society and economy. AI is no longer a science fiction concept. AI tools are being developed and incorporated into the daily operations of many organizations, including within the government. With the advent of AI technology and tools, questions have arisen regarding (1) the benefits and uses of AI innovation, (2) the limitations and challenges associated with developing and using AI, and (3) the risks and legal implications regarding AI. This panel discussion will address these questions from a public sector perspective, with a diverse panel of thought leaders in the AI space. Discussion topics will include: benefits, impacts, threats, and challenges of adopting AI; case studies of approaches to AI tools and policy at federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); review of the rapidly evolving legal landscape and policy considerations in the AI space; and identification of risks and a risk management framework related to AI-enabled technologies.

MODERATOR: Michael Chu, Assistant United States Attorney | US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas

SPEAKERS:

  • Charles Kim, Director for the Office of Petitions | USPTO
  • Hope Lu, Assistant US Attorney | US Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey
  • Jalal Mapar, Senior Advisor for Emerging Technologies, Science and Technology Directorate | US DHS
  • Elham Tabassi, Associate Director for Emerging Technologies, Information Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology | US Department of Commerce

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Through this panel, attendees will learn about:

  • Approaches and experiences of federal agencies regarding AI-enabled innovation, tools and policy.
  • Cross-sectional and interdisciplinary issues relating to AI. For example:
    • Insights on the intersection of intellectual property, AI, and emerging technologies, including developing and using AI to improve the reliability and durability of patent rights and the search and classification of the patent examination process.
    • Identification and impact of AI and emerging technologies on national security, such as cybersecurity and critical infrastructure.
  • Obstacles and challenges relating to AI and potential ways to overcome them.
  • Risks associated with AI innovation and management of that risk, including the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
  • Regulations and new legislation, recent cases and litigation matters regarding AI.

INTERACTIVITY: We plan to have demonstratives with polls and questions posed to the audience for engagement and analysis of the makeup of the panel attendees. We will have a moderated discussion with the panelists and then allow for Q&A from the audience.

Hosted Event contacts may be required to submit a copy of the brochure, invitation, agenda, or other material prior to approval. The name, date, and location of the event will be published to the Convention agenda when requested.

An administrative fee will be charged per meeting once NAPABA confirms that it can accommodate the requested date, time, room capacity, and a preferred location. Policies

Groups looking to host an event during the 2024 NAPABA Convention agree to abide by all operational policies and procedures that guide and govern NAPABA.

  1. Law schools, law firms, corporations, legal organizations, and NAPABA affiliates and partner organizations are eligible to submit a Hosted Event request form to host an event at the official Convention hotel.

  2. Groups may offer hosted bars (host pays) or cash bars (attendee pays) for non-alcoholic beverages without limitation. Alcoholic beverages may be offered at events only after 5 pm and must be ticketed. Open bars providing alcoholic beverages are not permitted. If alcoholic beverages will be served, groups may choose between the following:

    1. a cash bar offering beer and wine only (no spirits), where attendees pay for their own drinks; or,
    2. a hosted bar offering beer and wine only (no spirits), where the host covers the cost of drinks and drinks are ticketed. The hosted bar is limited to the estimated number of attendees per hour. For instance, if an event is hosting 50 people for a one-hour reception, the bar will be a hosted bar for 50 people.
  3. A separate and complete Hosted Event request form must be submitted for each event.

  4. Requests are on a space available basis and are not guaranteed.

  5. NAPABA reserves the right to relocate any room assignment. Please do not publish the name of the assigned space for your event(s) until after Friday, October 18, 2024.

  6. NAPABA will list or publicize your event(s) in printed and online program materials unless the Hosted Event contact requests otherwise.

  7. Audio Visual, additional equipment, special furniture, and food and beverage costs are the sole responsibility of the Hosted Event contact.

  8. Fees incurred by NAPABA for any room setup and breakdown requests beyond the standard NAPABA room set options are the sole responsibility of the Hosted Event contact. You will be promptly notified if such fees are anticipated or occur.

  9. NAPABA reserves the right to leave AV equipment, podiums, and head tables in rooms during your event(s).
