Personal Statement

Having served for two terms as NAPABA Secretary from 2013-2015, I now request your vote to allow me to become NAPABA’s Vice-President for Membership. Iam committed to the success and growth of NAPABA. If elected to the position of Vice-President for Membership, I would work enthusiastically to support NAPABA’s existing affiliates, assist groups that are seeking to become NAPABA affiliates or national associate members, and also promote direct membership to attorneys who are in areas that do not currently have a NAPABA affiliate. I have attended every NAPABA Convention since 2008, numerous regional conferences, NAPABA Lobby Day, and the Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy. Through my service on the NAPABA Board and participation in NAPABA’s signature events over the years, I have gained a deep appreciation for NAPABA’s mission and goals. I have also benefitted from great friendships and professional relationships generated through participation in NAPABA activities.
 
Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to earn your vote so that I can continue to serve NAPABA, its members, and the APA legal community as NAPABA’s Vice-President for Membership for 2015-16.
 
Goals, Challenges, and Opportunities
Several of the challenges and opportunities that NAPABA faces this year relate to taking full advantage of the improved functionality of its revamped website. Through my service as an officer of APABA-DC, one of NAPABA’s largest and most active affiliates, I bring prior experience in dealing with many of the transitions that NAPABA is undergoing by virtue of its new website. In 2008-09, when I was APABA-DC Treasurer and President-Elect, APABA–DC transitioned to a new website and changed its membership year to a calendar basis, as NAPABA is now doing. APABA-DC also required its members to create an online profile in order to continue to receive communications from APABA-DC. These transitions took time, but in the long run were very successful and beneficial in reducing administrative burdens, improving communications with members, and forging a closer connection between the members and the organization. I believe that my experience with APABA-DC’s transition to a new website/membership model will be useful in facilitating the changes that NAPABA is carrying out.
 
As a benefit to affiliates, the new website enables each affiliate to maintain a dedicated webpage with affiliate membership directories, photo albums, event calendars, and messaging features. I would work closely with the Vice-President for Communications and NAPABA staff to help current affiliates use the new website features, and would also promote the website features as a cost and time saving benefit
to attract new affiliates.
As NAPABA grows larger, maintaining open communications with affiliates and members becomes ever more challenging. If elected, I would make myself available on a regular basis through conference calls, e-mail, webinars, etc. to communicate with affiliate leaders to make sure they have information they need and receive the support they desire. I would also try to attend each of the regional conferences in order to
personally connect with the affiliates.
 
Background and Qualifications
In addition to having served as NAPABA Secretary for the last two Board terms, I have been actively involved since 2007 in APABA-DC, the 2009 NAPABA Affiliate of the Year, and consistently one of NAPABA’s most active affiliates. I have held the following APABA-DC Board and Committee positions:
  • Treasurer (2007-08)
  • President-Elect (2008-09)
  • President (2009-10)
  • Immediate Past President (2010-11)
  • Nominations Committee Co-Chair (2012-14) and Member (2011-12, 2014-present)
I was a Co-Chair of the D.C. Host Committee for the 2012 NAPABA Convention, the largest and most successful Convention in NAPABA’s history. In 2013, I was proud to be chosen to represent NAPABA at the inaugural 2013 Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy. I returned to Minneapolis for the alumni portion of the CBLA in 2014.
 
Professionally, I am in the Insurance & Reinsurance Group at Crowell & Moring LLP, in Washington, D.C. I represent insurers in coverage disputes arising mainly from underlying asbestos and environmental contamination claims, and I also represent insurers in asbestos bankruptcy cases. In addition, I counsel insurers on various complex coverage issues. I am also currently one of three ABA TIPS Connect! Diversity Fellows for 2014-16. In this role, I participate on the Diversity in theProfession, Insurance Coverage Litigation, and Toxic Tort and Environmental Liability Committees of the ABA Tort, Trial, and Insurance Practice Section, which gives me an additional platform to promote the benefits of NAPABA membership and publicize NAPABA activities, events, and achievements.

Candidate Bio

Tacie H. Yoon is an attorney at Crowell & Moring LLP in Washington, DC, where she practices in the Insurance and Reinsurance group. Tacie represents insurance carriers in complex coverage disputes, including those arising from underlying claims involving asbestos, environmental pollution, and alleged wrongful acts of educators. Tacie also protects insurers’ rights in bankruptcy cases in which the debtor’s insurance may be its most valuable asset. From time to time, Tacie collaborates with teams of Crowell attorneys from other practice groups to advise clients of the risks or benefits of purchasing or investing in companies that face exposure to asbestos liability, or that have emerged from an asbestos bankruptcy.

Tacie is actively involved in local and national bar activities. She is currently serving her second term as Secretary and member of the Executive Committee of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), and previously served as co-chair of the Host Committee for the 2012 NAPABA Convention in Washington, DC. Tacie also served as President of NAPABA’s Washington, DC, affiliate (APABA-DC), and has served for many years on APABA-DC’s Nominations Committee, which interviews candidates for judicial vacancies in the District of Columbia and surrounding areas. In 2014, she was selected to participate in the inaugural ABA TIPS CONNECT! Diversity Fellows program.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tacie received her BA from Yale University and her JD from Boston College Law School.
