Supermajority support for the Senate to honor Filipino War II veterans. Confirmation of an Asian Pacific American judge. These are some of the successes of the over 100 NAPABA members from across the nation who registered for the 6th Annual Lobby Day. Lawyers from 21 states came to Washington, D.C., for a two day event which included a Congressional Reception, a Supreme Court Bar group swearing-in, and meetings with offices around Capitol Hill.
NAPABA friends and members came together for an evening reception in the Kennedy Caucus Room to celebrate the achievements of Asian Pacific American attorneys and our community. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) served as honorary chair. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA-27), Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC-6), Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA-17), Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18), Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA-7), Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA-39), Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA-41) and Gaurab Bansal, deputy assistant to the president, also delivered remarks.
During Lobby Day, attendees prepared for 67 meetings with training sessions led by experts where they learned about the issues they would discuss and effective meeting strategies. Thirteen meetings were with members of Congress, including Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray of Washington, Representatives Barbara Lee (D) and Dana Rohrabacher (R) of California, and Representative Mike Doyle (D) of Pennsylvania. Special thanks to NAPABA Civil Rights Committee Chair Meredith Higashi, Immigration Committee Co-Chairs Erin Oshiro and Rio Guerrero, Judiciary Committee Co-Chair John Yang, and Kelly Honda and Nisha Ramachandran from the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans for leading the training sessions.
Congratulations to the 11 NAPABA members who are now admitted to the Supreme Court Bar, and a big thank you to Courtney Fong of Illinois for sponsoring their admission!
