PERSONAL STATEMENT OF
JIN Y. HWANG
FOR NAPABA VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS & OPERATIONS

Friends, I seek the honor of re-election as your Vice President for Programs and Operations of NAPABA for the 2013-2014 Board term. It is has been a privilege to serve as Vice President for Programs and Operations (VP P&O) as well as Northeast Regional Governor (RG), and I would like the opportunity to continue building on that strong, successful foundation in the upcoming Board term.

As VP P&O, I have been the primary Board member to ensure the successful execution of NAPABA’s 2012-2015 Strategic Plan. Because of NAPABA’s tremendous growth, in numbers, visibility, and prominence, the 2011-2012 Board collectively spent approximately 450 hours to develop the Strategic Plan to enhance and guide our monumental trajectory. I was the only RG to serve on the Strategic Plan Subcommittee and led a team to develop one of the Strategic Areas. In my current position, I have been leading the charge to facilitate, focus, foster dialogue, and energize the Board members so we can implement the Strategic Plan, which includes, among other things, the creation of an Affiliate Toolkit to help our newer affiliates by sharing best practices, development of new ways members can showcase their expertise throughout the year, and enhanced mobilization and visibility of our NAPABA Committees. Many of you have worked on strategic plans for your employers and other organizations, and thus, know how crucial it is to execute such transformational plans. It has been a wonderful opportunity to ably work with Board members, Committees Chairs, and other NAPABA partners to collectively execute NAPABA’s Strategic Plan.

In addition, as VP P&O, I was chair of a committee comprised of all 10 RGs and Immediate Past President (IPP) Nimesh Patel to collaboratively work on a proposal revising the NAPABA Trailblazer selection procedures, which had begun last term under then IPP Paul Hirose. After months of discussion and careful deliberation, the Board unanimously adopted the revised procedures. This project illustrates the importance of continuous evaluation and improvement, specifically, the importance of enhancing existing programs and policies as we mature as a major national bar association.

Further, as execution of the Strategic Plan, I am in the process of preparing standard operating procedures for NAPABA’s Committees. Our Committees are a vital part of NAPABA, and we must continue to support them, fostering growth and networking among our members. For example, I am developing a committee leadership succession plan, training and orientation for first-time Committee Chairs, and specific expectations and responsibilities for Committee Chairs.

As way of background, I am currently Assistant General Counsel with Verizon Enterprise Solutions, a business unit of Verizon Communications Inc., a Fortune 15 company. Prior to that, I was in-house counsel with Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless company in the U.S. Furthermore, I have been a member of Verizon Wireless’ Diversity Forum since 2007 and participated since 2010 in Verizon’s pro bono program Street Law.

In addition to serving as VP P&O (2012-2013) and Northeast RG (2010-2012) on the national level, I have been involved with NAPABA since 2005 on both the state and regional levels. In my home affiliate, the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey (APALA-NJ), I have served in several capacities, including as Vice President and Treasurer, committee co-chair, and a key organizer of various regional conferences.

I have also been involved for several years with other bar associations such as the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (KALAGNY), including as a mentor, and was also a panelist at the International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL) 2008 annual conference.

We have accomplished much this year, and I would like to continue building on that success as Vice President for Programs and Operations again. For example, I will be able to maintain the Board’s strong focus to implement the Strategic Plan throughout the 2013-2014 Board term and successfully engage our members, especially our Committees, throughout the year. In addition, as NAPABA has adopted a new Convention hosting model beginning next year, I will use my drive, initiative, and experience to ensure we maintain the high caliber of programming at the NAPABA National Convention in Arizona next year.

Based on my proven leadership capabilities and service, character and integrity, and dedicated commitment to NAPABA and our mission, I believe I am the best candidate and respectfully seek your vote as NAPABA’s Vice President for Programs and Operations for 2013-2014. Thank you for your support!
