PERSONAL STATEMENT OF
CAMILLA M. ENG
FOR NAPABA TREASURER
Dear Esteemed NAPABA Colleagues and Friends,
I hope that you and your families are well. I am writing to you today to seek your support as I embark on my campaign for NAPABA Treasurer.
A bit of background on me, raised in San Francisco by parents who first worked as field laborers in California’s Central Valley upon immigration from China, I am the first member of my family to graduate from college. A proud product of the California public school system, I attended inner-city schools throughout, from elementary to high school before graduating from the University of California at Davis and the University of California, Hastings College of Law.
Presently, I serve as a transactional lawyer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the largest public utility in the nation. As renewable energy counsel, I advise on a range of energy business projects relating to energy generation, purchase and transmission with practice focused on energy, contracts and real property law. In addition to geothermal, wind and biofuel projects, I currently represent the City of Los Angeles on all matters relating to the Los Angeles Solar Plan, the largest solar plan undertaken by any single city in the world.
With respect to my knowledge, skills and ability to successfully fulfill the role of NAPABA’s Treasurer, I share with you a few examples demonstrating my experience and enthusiasm for the job and for our community:
- Experienced Leadership: I presently serve as the president of the Southern California Chinese Lawyers' Association (SCCLA). One of the oldest minority bar associations in the country, SCCLA is a proud NAPABA affiliate. I also serve on the boards of several non-profit and community organizations including the Chinatown Service Center; Los Angeles County Bar Association Board of Trustees and Judicial Appointments Committee; Asian Pacific City Attorney Association; California Minority Counsel Program, Asian Pacific American Friends of Theater and the Hastings College of Law Alumni Board.
- Experience as Treasurer of NAPABA Affiliate and in Finance Matters: For SCCLA, I have served in every officer position for one term, including the position of treasurer. In addition, I have experience in managing money on a very larger scale. For over two years, I managed all outside counsel for the City of Los Angeles including an annual budget of $35 million.
- Involvement in NAPABA: I presently co-chair NAPABA's Public Sector Committee and serve as a member of its ad hoc committee on federal political appointments. In addition, I serve on the organizing committee for NAPABA's Regional Conference in California and as part of the pitch team for the 2010 Convention in Los Angeles. I look forward to serving on NAPABA’s Steering Committee for its 2010 Convention.
In the coming year, like many bar associations across the country, NAPABA will face the challenges of continuing to grow its membership. I envision the board collaborating with existing groups and organizations to increase NAPABA participation amongst members of communities such as those of bench officers, the South Asian bar, law students and beyond.
I look forward to continuing our work together and hope that you can support my campaign. If elected, I will work closely with Paul Hirose, NAPABA’s Treasurer for the past four years, to ensure the financial integrity of NAPABA and safeguarding of its assets, and will work with the NAPABA Board and staff to provide excellent service to its members and the APA community.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to share your thoughts. I would love to hear from you!
