NAPABA Officer Elections

NAPABA’s officer elections are underway! Endorsements will be accepted through September 1, 2014. Ballots must be received by September 12, 2014. Please click here for more information.

At-Large Board Member Candidates (Sept. 15 Deadline)

The NAPABA Board of Governors will appoint two At-Large Board Members to serve a two-year term that will begin in the 2014-2015 bar year. The NAPABA Nominating & Elections Committee invites all members in good standing to submit their names and statements as candidates for At-Large Board Member to elections@napaba.org on or before September 15, 2014. NAPABA Announces its 2014 Best Lawyers Under 40

NAPABA has selected 21 attorneys to receive the 2014 Best Lawyers Under 40 Award (BU40). The BU40 recognizes talented individuals in the Asian Pacific American (APA) legal community who are under the age of 40 and have achieved prominence and distinction in their respective fields while demonstrating a strong commitment to the community at relatively early stages in their careers. The BU40 Award will be presented on November 8, 2014, during the 2014 NAPABA Annual Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.

NAPABA Applauds Appointment of Jenny R. Yang as Chair of the EEOC

President Obama appointed Jenny R. Yang as Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Yang’s appointment will make her the first Asian Pacific American to serve as permanent Chair.

NAPABA Announces its 2014 Affiliate of the Year

NAPABA has selected the Minnesota Asian Pacific American Bar Association (MNAPABA) as its 2014 Affiliate of the Year. This award recognizes outstanding NAPABA affiliates for their best practices and accomplishments in their respective communities. The 2014 Affiliate of the Year Award will be presented at NAPABA's 2014 Annual Convention on November 8, 2014 during the 2014 NAPABA Annual Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.

NAPABA Announces 2014 Asian Pacific American-Owned Law Firm of the Year

NAPABA has named Lim, Ruger & Kim LLP as the 2014 Asian Pacific American (APA)-Owned Law Firm of the Year. NAPABA created the APA-Owned Law Firm of the Year Award to recognize APA-owned law firms that have achieved prominence and distinction while maintaining the highest ethical and legal standards in the profession, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to the APA community. The Award also celebrates growing APA ownership and entrepreneurship in the legal marketplace. The 2014 APA-Owned Law Firm of the Year Award will be presented at the 2014 NAPABA Annual Convention on November 8, 2014 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

NAPABA Announces 2014 Trailblazer Award Recipients

NAPABA has selected five exceptional attorneys to receive NAPABA’s highest honor, the Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award, which will be presented on November 9, 2014, at a special ceremony during the 2014 NAPABA Annual Convention. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements, commitment, and leadership of lawyers who have paved the way for the advancement of other Asian Pacific American attorneys. Trailblazers have demonstrated vision, courage, and tenacity, and made substantial and lasting contributions to the Asian Pacific American legal profession, as well as to the broader Asian Pacific American community.

NAPABA Applauds Nominations of Amit Mehta to the US District Court for the District of Columbia

President Obama nominated Amit Mehta to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. If confirmed, Mehta will be the first Asian Pacific American to serve as a federal district court judge in the District of Columbia.

NAPABA Celebrates Confirmation of Norman C. Bay to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

On July 15, Sthe U.S. Senate confirmed Norman C. Bay to be Commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) by a vote of 52-45. He is the first Asian Pacific American to lead this powerful regulatory agency. Commissioner Bay is only the third Asian Pacific American to serve as head of a government department or agency during President Obama’s second term.

CALL FOR NAPABA BOARD NOMINATIONS

The NAPABA Nominating and Elections Committee is accepting nominations for election to the officer positions of NAPABA for the 2014-2015 term.

The qualifications for NAPABA office are listed in the NAPABA Nominating and Election Rules. In order to be nominated as a candidate for a NAPABA officer position, candidates are required to submit a completed nomination petition form and a personal statement on or before 11:59 PM PT on July 14, 2014.

NAPABA Applauds Appointment of Scott H. Yun to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Centrl District of California

On June 23, Scott H. Yun was sworn into office to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. Judge Yun will be the 5th Asian Pacific American to ever be appointed as a bankruptcy judge in U.S. history.

NAPABA Celebrates LGBT Pride Month

NAPABA is proud to join the National Queer Asian Pacific American Alliance (NQAPIA) in celebrating the month of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. In recognition of LGBT Pride Month, this month the NAPABA logo will proudly display the colors of the rainbow flag that is often flown as a symbol of LGBT pride.

APA Legal Groups Urge Chicago Officials
to Investigate Anti-Asian Incident

NAPABA and its Chicago-based affiliates — the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Chicago (AABA), Chinese American Bar Association of Greater Chicago (CABA), and Korean American Bar Association of Chicago (KABA) — along with the Filipino American Lawyers Association of Chicago (FALA) and the Indian-American Bar Association of Chicago (IABA) express concern over the actions of certain Chicago police officers captured by recently-released video surveillance, which depicts officers using racist and anti-immigrant language during an arrest last summer.

NAPABA Applauds Confirmation of Indira Talwani
to the Federal District Court for Massachusetts

Today, Indira Talwani was confirmed to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts with a 94-0 vote. Judge Talwani will be the first person of Asian descent to serve as a federal judge in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the first person of Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the courts covered by the First Circuit, and only the second female Article III judge of South Asian descent nationwide.

NAPABA Celebrates Historic Milestone

Today, with the confirmation of Theodore Chuang to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the Obama Administration has tripled the number of Asian Pacific American judges on the federal bench, going from 8 judges to 24 active Article III APA judges since 2008. Judge Chuang is the first Asian Pacific American judge to serve on the federal judiciary in Maryland or in any of the states in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

NAPABA Applauds Confirmation
of Manish Shah to Federal Bench

Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Manish Suresh Shah to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by a vote of 95-0. He is the first person of South Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the state of Illinois and in the Seventh Circuit.

The NAPABA Women’s Leadership Committee is launching its 2014 Mentorship Program to assist young attorneys with experienced attorneys to better define their legal career path through the sharing of an experienced attorney’s wisdom, experiences and knowledge about the practice of law.
